Biography

First Prize winner of the International Conductors Contest at the W.M.C. 2022, the Netherlands, Yoann Combémorel is a French-born conductor based in Philadelphia and Helsinki. Currently the Conducting Fellow (‘26) at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, Yoann works under Yannick Nézet-Séguin and James Ross and will make his debut in December 2024 with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra at Marian Anderson Hall in Philadelphia.

Over recent seasons, Yoann’s passion for music and devotion to the art of conducting have provided him with extensive experience in choirs, symphonic orchestras, wind ensembles, and opera. He has collaborated with prominent European ensembles such as the Sonderjyllands Symfoniorkester (Denmark), the North Czech Philharmonic Teplice (Czech Republic), the MÁV Symphony Orchestra (Hungary), the Choeur de l’Opéra de Dijon (France), the Guards Band of Helsinki (Finland), the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy, the Helicon Ensemble (Netherlands), and the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Air Force (Belgium).

In 2024, Yoann graduated from the world-renowned Sibelius Academy in Finland, where he was mentored by Petri Komulainen. His education was further enriched by esteemed mentors including Jorma Panula, Sakari Oramo, Nils Schweckendiek, and David Claudio. He also honed his skills during summer programs with the renowned  pedagogues Johannes Schlaefli, Nicolàs Pasquet for symphonic repertoire, and Norbert Baxa for opera.

During the 2023–2024 season, Yoann was the recipient of the Europa Choir Akademie Scholarship in Germany, under the mentorship of Jan Hoffmann and Sylvain Cambreling. This experience allowed him to expand his repertoire with masterpieces such as Robert Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri and Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

In 2022, Yoann won the First Prize at the International Conductors Contest at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade, Netherlands, widely regarded as the most prestigious competition for wind orchestra conducting.

At the age of 18, to pursue his desire to make music accessible to a larger community, Yoann began his conducting career by founding the Ensemble Musical RhônAlpin, an ambitious initiative that brought together 70 of France’s most talented young musicians. Over five years, he organized numerous successful projects,  including a collaboration with the choir Blok’Notes to perform Mozart’s Requiem. Yoann and the EMRA gained recognition for delivering performances with the same energy and depth whether in suburban settings, rural areas, or prestigious concert halls.

A year later, at just 19 years old, Yoann made his professional debut by being named the Artistic and Musical Director of the Lyon Metropole Orchestra, one of France’s leading wind orchestras. During his tenure, he distinguished himself through collaborations with leading contemporary composers and commissioned new works every season to broaden the repertoire of wind ensemble performance at the highest level. His final performance with the LMO in 2023 premiered Laurent Bomont’s Carnet(s) de voyage(s) at the Philharmonie de Paris, France.

In 2019, Yoann graduated with four degrees at the Conservatoire de Chalon-sur-Saône in France: trombone (under Jean-Noël Gamet), solfège/voice leading, choir conducting, and orchestral conducting (under Philippe Cambreling). For his final exams, he conducted demanding works such as Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka and Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major

Originally from the suburbs of Grenoble, France, Yoann discovered the transformative power of art and music through a children’s program in primary school led by Grégory Orlarey and Eric Villevière. He places a high value on community service, believing that access to education and art is the key to a better world. Yoann is actively involved in a French humanitarian association that finances meals for Vietnamese children, enabling them to attend school. In the summer of 2024, he completed his first Ironman to raise funds for life-saving heart surgery for a six-year-old African child.

Today, Yoann continues to explore innovative ways to connect music with community engagement, aiming for artistic excellence and inspiring the next generation.
